Brief History:
Aging back to Krutha Yuga, there lived named King Raja Kupendra from Surya Vamsham. He was suffering from a skin disease for which no vaidya was able to provide a cure or prescribe a remedy.
Accidentally one day, the king went to the forest to hunt and landed in Ketaki Vanam. There he found a water stream flowing by and, being tired, washed his body to refresh himself. Surprisingly after washing his body in that waters, he observed that the skin disease was cured. Its believed that on the same night, the king had a dream in which Lord Shiva instructed him to build a temple at the same place.
The king built the temple, and the water stream which is called Pushkarini consisting of 8 theerthas or “Astha Theertha Amrutha Gundam” was also built with proper structure.
The Pushkarini is known as Dakshina Kasi, as there is a story that signifies this fact.
Long ago, a sage who was offering prayers in river Kasi was holding his personal stick with him. While offering prayers, his stick slipped his hands and flowed along the water currents. Later when the same sage came to Jharasangam on a pilgrimage found his stick in the Amrita Gundam and was surprised to see his same stick which he lost in Kasi waters.
It is said that after creating the World, Lord Brahma visited this place for meditation. Brahma himself created the Shiva Lingam. The specialty here is that devotees offer Ketaki flowers and leaves to Shiva Lingam, not shown to Lord Shiva.
